The Qur'an (Koran) in Surah (Chapter) 9:5 states, " Then when the Sacred Months (the 1st, 7th, 11th, and 12th months of the lslfunic calendar) have passed, then kill the Mushrikun (See V .2: I 05) wherever you find them, and capture them and besiege them, .and lie in wait for them in each and every ambush. But if they repent and perform As-Salat (/qamat-as-Saldt), and give Zakat, then leave their way free. Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."1
Mushrikun refers to the Mushrik which is "a person who rejects tawhid; an idolater, a polytheist."2 As-Salat is "a timed ordinance for the believers" or daily prayer.3 Zakat is "an annual alms tax or poor rate that each Muslim is expected to pay as a religious duty and that is used for charitable and religious purposes."4
This verse is very controversial. On its face it appears that this verse appears to command Muslims to slay infidels or idolators unless they repent and follow Islam or pay the zakat. A defense and alternate interpretation of this verse based on the context of the revelation can be found here.5
